Editor's Review:

Zoosk is the brainchild of Shayan Zadeh and Alex Mehr, a San Francisco partnership who joined the dating website game back in 2007. Since then it’s been made available in over 70 countries and is accessible in 25 languages. It’s an international site, then, and might be of interest to members who are looking for love across the seas, or just for someone in the same town.

This site has some links to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, which means that you can easily register and also share your activities on these sites if you choose to. As of January 2012 Zoosk.com claimed to have over 50 million members, so there are plenty of people waiting to get to know you. How many of these accounts are active and in use is another question, though, and you may find that you spend a good portion of your time getting in touch with people who are not really using their account any more. A way around this is to approach people who are “online”, which thankfully is a relatively simple process on this site because anyone who is online is highlighted as being so. Zoosk.com also tells you when people were “recently” online, but it gives no indication as to how “recent” this is. In the grand scale of time it could be years, though we imagine/hope it’s more like “in the past week”.

A basic search gave us a great number of results, though you have to click through pages manually (you can’t skip through to, say, page 10, without having gone through pages 1-9 already) which can be irritating because you don’t necessarily want to change the search parameters every time. When you find a member you’re interested in you can view their profile and photos in full. Members can upload up to 6 photos and they tend to be of a high enough quality to get a good idea of what a person looks like. The majority of people have made an effort to produce a profile with personal information that gives you a clue as to the sort of person they are and the sort of relationship they are looking for, though you’ll also come across a fair number that have just filled in the “basics” (gender, height, habits, children, location and education) so it’s hard to know all that much about them. Of course one way to get to know someone better is to send them an email message or get involved in an instant chat!

Zoosk isn’t cheap if you just want a 1 month subscription but the 6 months subscription offers very good value. The credit system is interesting too, if you’re into sending virtual gifts and winks, but not particularly necessary. It is a solid dating site, if somewhat uninspired. You’ll find enough members to suit most tastes though and its 6 month price is a bit of a bargain.
