Editor's Verdict:

CoupleMe's strength is its consistent look and functionality. Navigation is very straightforward and logical.  It's got a no-stress interface that works well for veterans and inexperienced surfers alike. While they have no outstanding features unique to them, they do provide a reasonable access of features for free members.  We wouldn't expect any site in a low price range to be wowing us with superb features. They are a basic no-frills, down to earth operation.

CoupleMe is a member of an organization called the Relationship Exchange, a resource and database sharing network for helping dating sites maximize their potential.  For members, this means access to millions of members not exclusively part of CoupleMe. This is good news for those of you who want access to a master database. While it's not entirely unique to CoupleMe they do offer a nice value-added feature for their members.  It's through the Relationship Exchange that CoupleMe is able to offer three different types of relationships:  Dating, Romance, and Intimate.  You simply choose one of the three as part of your search parameters, it will do the rest of the sorting and then return with your matches. When we ran our benchmark search through it, we were disappointed.  No results within 100 miles of Orlando, Florida. Hmmmmm.

As with most of the top dating sites, you must purchase a Premium membership to access the on-site e-mail system.  In this sense CoupleMe is pretty much in step with most of the well known sites. However, one of the key perks of Premium membership is undermined by the fact that CoupleMe will not permit free members to reply to e-mails sent by Premium members. Presumably they are hoping that free members will be persuaded to upgrade to Premium membership in order to reply. This seems an unwise policy for CoupleMe to adopt, especially as many of their rivals allow free members to reply to e-mails originating from Premium members.

Those familiar with our reviews know we place a great deal of emphasis on the size of a dating site's membership.  That's because we see how it produces a higher number of quality matches in a given search. The CoupleMe database is in the millions (they say) but will that translate into good search results? For us the search results were not encouraging, just three hits on our benchmark search.  We also check for how high the percentages are of members who post pictures with their profiles. The percentages were good in a local search, however, in a not so local search it ran about 50%.

In our view the only way a smaller site can offer members value for money when competing with the monster sites is by specializing and by getting and keeping the members actively involved in their site. We see no signs of that at CoupleMe.  There are no chats or ongoing  community activities. They do have instant messaging, but that is a private communication approach. We  feel compelled to give  poor marks here, except for the Profiles and Photos areas, where Couple Me have done fairly well by providing free members with access to a limited range of data.

We're not excited about the offerings at CoupleMe (it's about as exciting as vanilla ice cream). CoupleMe''s lack of matching ability is a real concern when it comes to giving a verdict.  It may be a good site for those who want to try a premium service and don't want to invest more than a modest sum doing it.  But with all the drawbacks we've identified, why not try out a site which offers better prospects. There's nothing compelling happening at Couple Me, as we see it.  We don't like offering negative reviews but here there just isn't anything to get excited about.

Please note that Couple Me has now been discontinued.
