Editor's Verdict:

Let's start this by saying that WebDate is aiming at a very young (early twenties) crowd interested in the sexier side of the dating curve. WebDate's approach is a hybrid dating / social networking combination, one that's getting more popular everyday. They appear to function primarily as a social site with dating included. We say that because some members state in their profiles that they've been members for more than five years. That signals social site to us.

Our initial impressions of WebDate as a dating site is that it doesn't have enough membership to adequately serve a broad area like the USA (their area of operation). The advanced search parameters were the most general we've seen, indicating a relatively small membership. Most of the search parameters involved members' online status or photo content. We know from experience that just mentioning verified photos, as WebDate do, indicates that some games are being played on prospective users. At a free site like this, anything is possible and phony pictures can be fairly common.

Our search results were disappointing in numbers and type. We got 6 listings from a general search that could have turned up a hundred if they had a substantial membership. These 6 members had photos (the site won't let you send a message without photos and a profile essay). They had all been on-site within the past week and they seemed sincere. The listing information was limited, including the basics of age, location, what the member was looking for, and how many photos were available. The members full profile was available for us too.

Photo-wise, WebDate has a slide-show photo feature that is fantastic. The quality is first rate, the size of the photos is generous, and the way the photos change is just great. It's as good as anything we've come across on any dating site, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it on a free site like this.

For member involvement they have the Video chat option which is nice and probably the core element of the social side. You can also email other members (with photos and a profile on record) so that's a nice plus. Perhaps if they can get their membership numbers up, through an affiliation or partnership, they would be a better option as a dating site.

We don't want to be negative about WebDate.com. They've been around for some years and seem to be serving a satisfied membership (members with histories here). We'll take the view that it's a popular enough social site that it gets some appreciable web traffic but it has severe shortcomings as a dating site. You could join WebDate if you want, shake the tree, see if any fruit falls your way. If the results are fruitless, then you can say adios to the dating aspect. If you're lucky, you may make a few good friends or find a new social circle to travel in. After all, it's a free location and they do have some nice social features. The old adage, "nothing ventured, nothing gained" comes to mind.
