Editor's Verdict:

Book Of Matches is a 100% free online dating site. We could not find any options to pay for specific upgrades, add-ons or premium memberships. This means that all of the site's members have free access to the same range of features. As these are comparable to the features offered by some rival sites as part of a fee-based membership, BookOfMatches would seem to represent good value for money. However, we're not entirely convinced.

When performing a search you can narrow the distance range to as little as 50 miles. Unfortunately, when the listings appeared we noticed no page number counts or anything to indicate how many listings we had generated with our search.  The listings which appeared after our search had less information than we are accustomed to. Additional profile information could be accessed with one click, but this two-step approach can be tedious.

In Orlando, Florida we got sixteen total listings for our standard search.  There were ten from the immediate area (workable, in our opinion). Ten of the sixteen also had photos.  The photos are small in the listings but clicking on one does bring up a nice enlargement, along with companion photos that can also be enlarged.  The profile section is jammed with as much as the member wants to provide

Book of Matches has created a relaxed environment where members can interact in both frank and fun ways. The chat rooms help to build a sense of community among members and can be used for playful or poingnant discussions. The “rate a member” feature is a fun way to highlight members which you find attractive. Members who receive high scores are featured in a gallery of “who's hot.” If you want to see who's topping the ratings, just click the "Rate" button on the home page menu to see the current results.  It's not taken too seriously as it's meant to be a fun way to stimulate interest and interaction. You should note that BookOfMatches does not offer instant messaging, compatibility matches, or other permium perks offered to fee-paying members at other sites. So there is little point signing up with BookOfMatches if you are interested in having such premium features at your disposal at a future point.

The most significant weakness at Book Of Matches is that they have a relatively small membership.  They don't state their membership total on site, but their numbers seem to be in the millions. They service the US, Canada and Australia primarily but they also have members in the Philippines, UK, Hong Kong, and other foreign locales. That international scope stretches the limits of a membership.  The pitfall of a small membership spread out internationally is the likelihood of getting only a small number of matches in your searches.  This can put a damper on your success in finding the right relationship.  But still, if you live in a fairly populated area, you can at least see what happens.

Book Of Matches has a different flavor than most dating sites because of the free element. The ability of all members to freely contact one another on the site creates a level playing field and an element of community that is impossible at other sites.  The features offered  are useful while contributing to member activity and involvement.  The profile and photo sections are also quite good. However, it also has several shortcomings which should make you think twice about signing up. Firstly, the site does not have the most intuitive navigation and lacks some key facets. For example, the listings which are generated by a search have no count to indicate how many members' listings you may browse through. The most significant weakness of Book Of Matches is, undoubtedly, its low membership numbers, as this greatly reduces your chances of finding a match and/or getting a date through the site. Free dating sites are enticing, but they still need to be able to deliver results to members who invest their time in these sites.
