Joining:

You must sign-up as a free member in order to browse MatchMaker.com's members' database (though you may take a virtual tour before joining).
You must complete an in-depth questionnaire upon joining. This comprises a series of multiple choice questions plus 20 longer essay-type questions. These longer questions are optional however. You may also return and update your profile at any time.
You may reply to any emails you receive as a free member. However, in order to initiate contact with another member via email and in order to chat via instant messenger, you must become a premium member. Membership prices are quoted above.
Premium memberships give you all the features of a free membership, except that you may also initiate contact with other members via email, and you may also chat with other members via instant messenger. As a premium member your profile will be listed above all free members' profiles in the search results, giving yours much more exposure. You will get a 5-day free trial when you upgrade to premium membership. If at any point in the first 5-days you wish to cancel, then your card will not be billed.

Launched in 1985 as a simple bulletin-board dating system, MatchMaker.com is now a thriving community of more than 8 million registered members, with 50,000 new sign-ups each week. As one of the oldest dating sites around, MatchMaker is also one of the most trusted and respected dating sites. When you join MatchMaker, you will be asked to complete a fairly extensive questionnaire, which can take you from a few minutes to an hour, depending on how much work you put into it. The questionnaire comprises a number of multiple choice questions with an additional 20 longer essay-type questions. These essay questions are optional, but remember: the more work you put into your profile, the more interest you will get from other members, so it's advisable to spend some time on these questions - this is your opportunity to make a great first impression after all! You may update your profile at any time however, meaning that you needn't fill all the answers in upon joining.

Once you've joined MatchMaker, you will be able to search the member profiles in your area and view all the photographs a member has and listen to his or her voice greeting, if they've posted one. As a free member, you will be able to access all parts of the site and you will even be able to reply to any emails you are sent. This is a feature that is sadly lacking in many dating sites - with most dating sites you have to upgrade to paid premium membership if you want to reply to an e-mail, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover that this was not the case with MatchMaker.com. This can be particularly beneficial to you if you happen to be attractive, have an eye-catching pic and a humorous profile - simply wink at your potential match and if he/she is interested (and they're a premium member) maybe he/she will email you - then you can just reply for free! If they're not a premium member, maybe he/she will even upgrade to premium membership just to make first contact with you - especially if you wink at them enough! Of course, that's very devious indeed - just don't tell anyone you read that here! But our point is that if you happen to be attractive, and particularly if you're female, you could be an active member of the MatchMaker community without even paying for premium membership!

Another feature we particularly liked was the ability to perform a keyword search on other members' profiles. So if, for instance, you're interested in horses, you may want to perform a keyword search on the word "horse" or "horses" and see which members' profiles contain this word. This can be a great way to get to know other members with similar interests and is not a common feature on most dating sites.

Most other dating sites allow you to perform a search for other members based on their geographical location, gender and age before even having to sign-up for free. MatchMaker does not allow you to do this unless you sign up for free first and hand over your e-mail address - or at least that's the way it seems! But all is not what it seems on MatchMaker.com!!! We at No1Reviews.com have discovered a secret way for you to view the MatchMaker members in your area before you join! At the bottom right of the MatchMaker.com homepage you'll see the words "Site Map". A sitemap is normally a link to a page that shows the hierarchical structure of the website you're on (this site has one too - see down below). However, on MatchMaker.com, the word "Site" links to a page where you can view singles by state (US and Canada only), and the word "Map" links to a page where you can view singles by the major cities! So for instance if you click on the word "Site" at the bottom-right of the homepage, you can then choose your state from the next page and your city from the page after that, and you will then be shown profiles in the city and state you chose. You can then filter these profiles by gender, but not by age. This may at least give you an idea of who's online in your area before you even need to sign-up as a free member! We have no idea why MatchMaker.com have decided to include these links in such a clandestine manner - but they have - and now you know all about their little secret!

MatchMaker is jam packed with all the features you would expect from a dating site as well as many more you would not expect to find. It has a diverse community of active members, with whom you may communicate via e-mail, instant messenger or in one of the many chat rooms available, where you may chat to them in the public chat room or by private messaging. While this pales into comparison with Match.com, our No. 1 rated dating site with a staggering 25 million members, it still has a large enough database to give you a great chance of finding a date in your area.
