Editor's Verdict: eHarmony differs from almost every other dating site in that it won't allow you to search the members' database, no matter whether you're a free member or a fully paid-up member! You're probably thinking that's crazy, right? But the way eHarmony works is that they do the searching and the matchmaking for you. When you join eHarmony, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire. This questionnaire isn't like the other quick questionnaires you're asked to complete with other dating sites - this questionnaire is long - very long! In total there are 436 questions on this questionnaire, which are based on 29 different criteria - criteria like values, character, spiritual beliefs, humor, religion, sensitivity, passion, intelligence, education, sex and so on. Many of these require you to answer on scale from 1 - 7 as shown below...
Depending on the amount of thought you give to each question, this questionnaire will take you between 1 and 2 hours to complete - so a cup of coffee is probably in order! We suggest you answer carefully before answering each question, as you will not be able to go back and change your answers later. Having said that, the first answer that pops into your head is probably the correct one - so don't keep second guessing yourself either! The good thing here is that you will be given the option to save your questionnaire at any point and return to finish it later - so you need not complete it all in one sitting. As soon as you finish the questionnaire, you will be able to view your personality profile. Many members have reported that this extensive questionnaire really does produce a very accurate profile of their personality. Once your questionnaire is complete, the system will begin trying to find compatible matches for you using its patented Compatibility Matching System. The system may return just a handful of matches or it may return 50 or so, depending on your profile and the number of matches it has found. Also, you may not receive any matches for a few days or even a few weeks on eHarmony - so don't expect results right away. However, the matches you do get should (in theory) be very closely matched to your personality type. Once matches are sent to you, you will be able to view the profiles of your matches and decide whether or not to initiate contact with them. In order to initiate contact, you must be a fully paid-up subscriber to eHarmony. And in order to reply, the person you're contacting must also be a fully paid-up member. Contacting the other person may be done in one of two ways: either by using the Guided Communication Process to break the ice, or bypass this using the Fast Track system and just contact them directly. The Guided Communication System, which eHarmony recommends you use is another round of Q&A's between you and your match, which involves the following:
The Fast Track communication system allows you to bypass all this hooey and contact your match directly. With all these questions and answers and the "Guided Communication System" eHarmony is definitely not for those of you who are looking for a quick date, a casual fling or just a bit of fun. It is basically for those of you who are looking to find your life partner, and nothing less. eHarmony also only facilitates relationships between men and women - it does not offer same sex matches. This is because the data on which the Compatibility Matching System is based was collected from heterosexual couples and they don't have data from homosexual couples upon which to base their algorithms. So if you're gay, this site is not for you. However, one of eHarmony's key demographics seems to be conservative Christians, so they're not really targeting homosexuals. Personally, I feel that all this scientific approach to dating based on hundreds of questions and answers and personality profiling is really taking all the fun out of dating. For me at least, part of the experience of dating is discovering for yourself how well matched you are and profiling your partner's personality yourself, subconsciously, in your own mind. Personally, I would rather do my own searching and matchmaking, rather than relying on an algorithm to do it for me! For me at least, most of the fun of online dating is being able to search through hundreds of profiles of potential matches in my area, browse through their photographs, read what they have to say about themselves and even watch them live on video. Then I like to strike up a conversation over email or instant messenger, and do my best to charm them into meeting me for a date. You can do all of this and more at many of the other dating sites in this category, notably Match.com, our No. 1 choice in this arena. But at eHarmony.com, all of that is replaced with an algorithm that determines your compatibility based on 29 different criteria! Is it just me, or does that take all the fun out of it? Whilst the lengthy registration process and the fact that you can't perform your own searches may put some people off eHarmony.com, there is no doubt that it's advanced matchmaking skills make it a great choice for anyone serious enough about finding a long-term serious relationship to complete the lengthy registration questionnaire. Strictly speaking, eHarmony.com doesn't really belong in this category, as it is a matchmaking site, rather than a dating site per se. This is noticeable from the many differences between eHarmony.com and many of the other sites listed here. However, with more and more dating sites offering automatic matchmaking, the distinction between the two groups has become blurred enough for us to lump them all together in the one category. However, if an advanced matchmaking site is what you're after, then we recommend Chemistry.com, which just beats eHarmony in terms of its matchmaking ability and is sure to return more matches in a shorter space of time. Whatever your opinion on eHarmony, its popularity and success at matching couples with one another can't be ignored. They have over 12 million members worldwide, mostly in the US, Canada and the UK, and they claim that an unbelievable 90 people a day get married to other lonely hearts they found through eHarmony's matching system! Let me run that by you again - 90 people a day!!!! Could you be next? Well, if you're willing to plough your way through the 436-question questionnaire, pay the hefty joining fee of $49.95 for just one month's membership, and wait around for your highly compatible matches to trickle in, then just maybe you will be! But for me, I'm off to see if there's anyone new in my area on Match.com!
